56 Variation of a Face

Repetition: 56 Faces

Through a combination of memorization and a limiting process-based approach, I go in search of the quality of the object. Challenging myself to explore the same object by drawing it over and over again I begin to understand its essence.

56 Variation of a Face

in 2014 I created several hundred drawings of a face.

I really liked the drawings, but they didn’t have any presence they were the wrong size and not the right quality of material.

PRESENCE

PRESENCE

During the process of exploration, it’s the materials that guide and limiting my work.

I find that each image demands to be a certain size, to have the right presence.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION

We had a 3-hour window to install the piece. It was going on an old brick wall, so I had to figure out a system that would not use nails. Each piece was numbered and had an assigned place.
